The World Whiskey Awards names several whiskeys each year in several categories. We got out paws on their best rated bourbon, blended scotch, and best grain spirit. Will has carried the “best grain spirit” whiskey in the store for the last few years and it really is a great whiskey, but quite unsuspecting. See the selection below
2018 World’s Best Blended Whisky - Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve
A blended scotch (meaning both malt and grain whiskeys, as opposed to a blended malt or blended grain whiskey) that wants to be your friend. It has those honey and butterscotch flavors with only the faintest of smoke/peat notes. 40% ABV, No age statement.
2018 World’s Best Grain Whisky - Bain’s Cape Mountain Single Grain Whisky
A grain whisky from, of all places, South Africa. This whisky is also incredibly affordable. Its sweet and creamy with a short finish that has a touch of spice to it.
2018 World’s Best Bourbon - 1792 Full Proof
This big boy is bottled 62.5%. Bottling whiskey at such a high proof brings a lot more flavor to the bottle and is a decision that usually costs the company money as they could have simply proofed the whiskey down to 40% and sold A LOT more bottles. But the distiller thought this whiskey was better the way it came out of the barrel. It has those big rich oak and toffee flavors.
